Job description
Locations: London, Leeds, Sheffield (can be anywhere in the UK but flexible with travelling to office / site)
Role:
Protection & Control Design Engineer specialising in battery energy storage system (BESS) integration with HV substations and networks. Responsible for leading the design and development of HV protection and control schemes (11kV–132kV+) for BESS projects interfacing with TO/DNO networks.
Key responsibilitiesinclude developing protection schemes for transformers, feeders, switchgear and BESS inverters, producing AC/DC schematics, relay logic diagrams, wiring and cable schedules, and supporting protection settings and coordination studies.
Experienced in CT/VT specification, relay and protection panel design, and contributing to short-circuit, load flow and fault-level analysis.
Also involved in SCADA integration, communications architecture and signal development for BESS, PCS and substation equipment, ensuring compliance with G99/G100, G81, and UK grid standards.
Works closely with multidisciplinary design, construction and commissioning teams to deliver end-to-end turnkey energy infrastructure projects, while supporting and mentoring junior engineers.
Background: Electrical Engineering degree/HND/HNC with experience in HV/EHV protection design within utilities, contractors or consultancies, and strong understanding of UK TO/DNO substation standards and specifications.
