Flue Gas Treatment Commissioning Engineer

Overview

We are seeking an experienced FGT Commissioning Engineer to support the commissioning and start-up of the Flue Gas Treatment system on a large-scale Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility. The successful candidate will have a strong mix of mechanical and Control & Instrumentation (C&I) expertise, with hands-on commissioning experience in waste-to-energy, power generation, or heavy process industries.


This role will involve close collaboration with construction, operations, OEMs, and EPC partners to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient commissioning of the plant in line with environmental permit requirements.


Key Responsibilities

Commissioning & Technical

  • Lead and execute commissioning activities for the FGT plant, including:

  • Fabric filter or ESP

  • Dry/semi-dry scrubbers

  • Lime and activated carbon injection systems

  • ID fans and dampers

  • Stack and emissions monitoring interfaces

  • Develop and implement commissioning procedures, test plans, and method statements.

  • Perform functional testing of mechanical equipment, valves, dampers, and rotating machinery.

  • Carry out loop checking, I/O testing, and functional testing of instruments and control systems.

  • Support cold & hot commissioning, performance testing, and environmental compliance testing.

Controls & Instrumentation

  • Verify correct installation and operation of:

  • Pressure, temperature, flow, and gas analysers

  • Emissions monitoring systems (CEMS interface)

  • Actuated valves and dampers

  • Work with DCS/PLC engineers to validate control logic, interlocks, and cause & effect.

  • Assist in tuning control loops and optimising plant performance.

Mechanical

  • Inspect and sign off mechanical completion for FGT systems.

  • Troubleshoot issues with:

  • Conveying systems (lime/AC)

  • Fans, ductwork, and expansion joints

  • Bag filters and ash discharge systems

  • Support punch-list closeout and system handover.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all activities comply with:

  • Site HSEQ rules

  • Permit to Work systems

  • Environmental permit limits

  • Participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and commissioning readiness reviews.

  • Support emissions compliance testing and optimisation.

Documentation & Handover

  • Produce commissioning reports and test records.

  • Support development of operating procedures and training materials.

  • Assist with handover to operations and maintenance teams.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical, Electrical, C&I, or Process Engineering (or equivalent experience).

  • Proven commissioning experience on: EfW, power plants, or large industrial process plants.

Strong understanding of:

  • Flue Gas Treatment systems

  • Process control and instrumentation

  • Mechanical plant and rotating equipment

  • Ability to read and interpret:

  • P&IDs

  • Electrical schematics

  • Control philosophies

  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.

  • Willingness to work shifts and extended hours during commissioning phases.

Desirable

  • Direct experience commissioning EfW FGT systems.

  • Knowledge of environmental compliance testing and emissions limits.

  • Experience with DCS/PLC systems (e.g. Siemens, Valmet, ABB, Emerson, Rockwell).

  • COMAH or similar regulated site experience.
