Environment Manager - Outside IR35 - Contract

  • 6 months contract

  • Remote based with some adhoc monthly travel to London

  • Outside IR35

The Environment Manager is responsible for the end-to-end management of technical and test environments across a transformation programme.The role ensures environments are provisioned, stable, secure, cost-effective, and aligned with programme milestones, enabling smooth delivery, compliance, and collaboration across multiple teams.

The Environment Manager acts as the central point of contact for environment management, coordinating across Infrastructure, DevOps, QA, Release, BAU, and project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Environment Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and implement a programme-wide environment and test environment strategy to optimise usage of existing environments, reduce cost, and avoid duplication.

  • Ensure all required technical environments (development, testing, staging, and production) are established, configured, and maintained to meet project and programme needs.

  • Work with the central Environments Manager to support the establishment of an Environment Centre of Excellence.

Environment Provisioning & Lifecycle Management

  • Oversee the provisioning, maintenance, stability, and lifecycle of all programme environments.

  • Ensure environments are appropriately resourced, updated, and aligned with project milestones and delivery requirements.

  • Continuously monitor and optimise environments to ensure performance, stability, availability, and security.

  • Provide ongoing support for environments post-implementation to ensure they continue to meet programme needs.

Release, Deployment & Transition

  • Facilitate efficient deployments by aligning environment readiness with release plans and project objectives, working closely with the Release Manager.

  • In collaboration with the Change and Transition Manager, create and deliver plans that coordinate environment readiness for project go-live, ensuring smooth deployment and minimal downtime.

  • Collaborate with BAU teams to ensure smooth handover of environments into operational support.

Risk, Issue & Dependency Management

  • Identify, communicate, and manage risks and dependencies related to environment availability, performance, access, and security.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve environment-related issues, working closely with IT, Infrastructure, and technical teams.

  • Implement preventative measures to minimise recurring environment issues and delivery impact.

Test Data & Quality Support

  • Work closely with test teams to understand test data requirements, including data sourcing, refresh cycles, data integrity, masking, and compliance.

  • Support and promote automation of test data and environment processes where possible.

Stakeholder Management & Communication

  • Act as the single point of contact for environment management within the programme.

  • Coordinate across Infrastructure, QA, DevOps, project, and delivery teams to ensure environments meet technical specifications and programme objectives.

  • Ensure clear, proactive communication with stakeholders on environment status, risks, and dependencies.

Key Deliverables & Success Measures

  • All programme environments provisioned, stable, and aligned with delivery milestones.

  • Environment strategy implemented with demonstrable cost optimisation and reduced duplication.

  • Risks and dependencies identified early and mitigated without impacting delivery timelines.

  • Test data provided on time and compliant with security and data masking standards.

  • Accurate, current documentation maintained for all environments.

  • Positive stakeholder feedback reflecting effective communication, collaboration, and proactive issue resolution.

  • Continuous improvement achieved through process optimisation and automation.

Relevant Experience

  • Experience managing environments across multi-project programmes with complex dependencies and multiple stakeholders.

  • End-to-end management of environments across development, testing, staging, and production.

  • Experience setting up and managing hybrid environments, working with internal teams and external partners.

  • Strong experience implementing environment governance, including documentation, access control, and security compliance to meet audit requirements.
