Director of Software Engineering – Semiconductor Sector

The Opportunity

My client, a leading organisation in the semiconductor sector, is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to define and drive its technical strategy across Europe. This role combines visionary leadership with hands-on execution and is ideal for someone who can inspire software teams, build scalable platforms, and set high standards of engineering excellence in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

The Director will oversee multiple cross-functional software engineering teams, guiding the design, development, and delivery of mission-critical systems. You will work closely with senior executives, product leadership, and R&D stakeholders to ensure software engineering outcomes align with the company’s ambitious growth and innovation strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and deliver the software engineering strategy across European operations

• Lead architecture and platform decisions to ensure scalability, resilience, and long-term maintainability

• Mentor, coach, and develop engineering leaders and their teams, fostering a culture of innovation and accountability

• Translate commercial and product objectives into actionable technical roadmaps

• Establish best practices in coding standards, architecture, and system design

• Partner with executive leadership, product, and operations to align software initiatives with business outcomes

• Act as a thought leader in driving the adoption of modern engineering practices and tools

Requirements

• 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years in senior leadership roles

• Proven success leading distributed teams in complex, global environments

• Experience in high-tech or advanced industries such as semiconductors, aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, or other technology-driven sectors (semiconductor experience is not required, but transferable expertise is highly valued)

• Strong background in system architecture, large-scale software development, and modern development practices

• Excellent stakeholder management, with the ability to bridge technical strategy and business objectives

• Programming Languages: C++, Python, Java

• Cloud Platforms: AWS, Azure, or GCP

• DevOps & Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)

• Software Architecture: Microservices, APIs, distributed systems

• Databases: SQL and NoSQL (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra)

• Security: Secure coding practices, application security, identity and access management

• Collaboration & Tools: Jira, Confluence, Git
