Job description
Lead Electrical Design Engineer – High Voltage Systems
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop comprehensive electrical site configurations for both public and privately owned infrastructure, ensuring proper integration of utility services to all critical equipment and systems on-site.
- Exhibit in-depth familiarity with key industry technical documents and standards such as ENATS 41-24, NGTS specifications (including RES i3, 3.02.014, 2.01, 1, 3.01.02), BS 50522, BS 7430, and an applied knowledge of G81 guidelines and approved distribution network operator (DNO) equipment listings.
- Assist in creating technical requirements and detailed specifications for essential substation components, including instrument transformers (CTs, VTs), disconnectors, surge arresters, post insulators, and complex assemblies such as circuit breakers.
- Lead the design process for support frameworks used in Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) applications, spanning voltage ranges from 66kV to 400kV; interface with manufacturers to communicate design intent and evaluate technical drawings.
- Conduct engineering assessments for busbar configurations, analyzing for mechanical and environmental loads (short-circuit forces, wind stress, ice accumulation) to select optimal materials and structural supports.
- Generate grounding system layouts using fundamental engineering principles, ensuring compatibility across voltage levels and validation by specialist earthing engineers.
- Create coordinated layouts for site-wide cable and duct routes, aligning with civil, mechanical, and other disciplines. Must understand cable classification and installation standards for systems ranging from 11kV to 132kV and preferably up to 400kV.
Ideal Qualifications and Background:
- Formal education in Electrical Engineering (BEng/BSc, HND, or HNC) with a focus on power systems.
- Prior experience in high voltage electrical design, particularly within engineering consultancies, EPC contractors, or utility firms involved in power transmission and distribution.
- Proficiency in developing electrical layout schematics for substations and related infrastructure, including:
- 11kV and 22kV distribution systems
- 33kV indoor switchgear/control facilities
- Outdoor AIS substations at 66kV and 132kV
- Strong awareness of construction and design standards relevant to HV and EHV substations.
- Solid grasp of cable routing considerations, including type selection and mechanical constraints (e.g., bend radius, rigidity, flexibility).
